California is Completely Free of Drought for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.
For the first time in 25 years, no portion of California is facing dryness. This milestone follows challenging years marked by insufficient rainfall that exacerbated fire dangers and pressured its enormous farming industry.
A Map Indicates An Absence of Abnormally Dry Areas
The latest assessment from the U.S. Drought Monitor showed that California in its entirety is without drought or abnormal dryness. This shift resulted from a period of significant storms that topped up water storage sites like Oroville and Shasta far beyond their long-term norms.
“To those aged 25 and below you’ve always lived in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” remarked a local meteorologist.
From Intense Storms to Rainy Seasons
The path to this point featured severe and lethal winter storms that battered the state in the not-too-distant past, causing significant overflow, blackouts, and deaths. While those storms began to alleviate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.
As late as late December, pockets like Modoc County were still classified as experiencing dryness. Subsequent downpours at the onset of 2026 finally erased those last vestiges of dryness.
A Crucial Snowpack Remains a Concern
Yet, authorities caution that being out of drought does not mean being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the mountain snow accumulation place it at roughly seven-tenths of the historical norm.
This snowpack, which provides a significant portion of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for long-term water security. State experts stress that it is not yet time to determine the outlook for the coming year.
“What we are observing right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” commented a state water resources manager. “The goal is the snow accumulation to improve by the start of April so that we’re closer to average.”
While the drought map is entirely green, the focus now shifts to preserving this positive water situation during the rest of the year.
