Crew Member Reveals Emotional Distress Following Wave of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her scientific research and years of training to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She noted that even with the backlash, important benefits had come out of the experience, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the edge of space.
The group of women also comprised accomplished professionals from different industries.
The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
