England to Start the European Championship 2028 Campaign at City’s Home Ground
England’s men’s team will commence their UEFA Euro 2028 campaign at the Etihad Stadium, assuming they achieve the anticipated passage for a championship staged throughout the bulk of Britain and the Ireland.
The Etihad Stadium has not welcomed an English men’s match since the spring of 2016, when Turkey were beaten 2-1 in a friendly, but is expected to host the national team for their inaugural game on a Saturday in June 2028.
The team are set to play their last two group stage games at Wembley Stadium, but, should they win Group B, their knockout stage opener would take place at the Newcastle stadium. Finishing second would mean beginning the playoffs at Everton’s ground.
Championship Launch and Demonstration
The tournament was inaugurated at an gathering in a London landmark on the previous evening. High-ranking officials from the tournament organizers and the organizing bodies were barracked as they entered the location by approximately 50 activists, who demanded Israel’s national side to be expelled from global football because of the situation in Gaza.
Signs were displayed with phrases stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Event Schedule
The first match of Euro 2028 will be held at the the national stadium of Wales in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a game that will involve Wales if they secure a place.
The national stadium will host both semi-finals and the championship match, which will be played on Sunday 9 July with a kick-off time at 5:00 PM.
It is hoped that an earlier start, which will also be implemented for European club finals from the upcoming season, will appeal to households and help connect with a wider spectrum of viewers.
Participating Countries
The Ireland are due to play their first game at the Dublin stadium and the Scottish team would do the same at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
The national sides of all four hosts will participate in the qualifying tournament; two reserved places will be held in reserve for any that do not reach the tournament through that route.
Stadiums and Elimination Phase
Villa Park and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium finalize the nine tournament locations. Every stadium will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarter-finals held at the national stadium of each host.
The draw for the qualifiers will be held in Belfast, which was dropped as a tournament location last year when it was revealed Casement Park could not be redeveloped in time, on December 6, 2026.
Tournament Vision
“It will be a tournament for the supporters and a celebration of everything we love about the game – its fervor and power to unite individuals.”
Over 3 million admissions, a record for a UEFA European Championship, are projected to be made available to fans.
