India's capital Awakens to Hazardous Smog Following Celebrations

Tuesday brought residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered inhaling dangerously toxic air that registered in the "severe" level.

Extremely High Air Quality Measurements

Several parts of the capital showed an AQI above 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the healthy limit set by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of eighteen hundred, representing fifteen to twenty times above acceptable limits.

Fireworks Prohibition and Current Changes

Beginning in 2020, authorities had implemented a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the dangerous smog that engulfs the capital as winter begins.

However earlier this year, the recently formed regional administration appealed to the supreme court to request a relaxation of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been questioned by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a compromise between "tradition and public health".

Legal Ruling and Implementation

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological activists, judges complied with the request, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during designated hours throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was widespread flouting of the regulated periods across the capital, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener version.

Several air quality sensors throughout the city showed pollution spiking around midnight to the most severe levels observed during Diwali in at least three years.

International Implications

The proliferation of firecrackers during the celebrations also sparked a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming deteriorating air quality in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles originating in neighboring India following the events.

Chronic Environmental Problem

Extremely elevated concentrations of air contamination in the capital have remained as a serious problem for more than 15 years, with the condition continuing to worsen.

Around the festival period, the concentration of toxic airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been observed to shoot up to 70% higher the peak levels ever recorded in China's capital, which was once viewed as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.

Multiple Contamination Contributors

This crisis in the capital is resulting from a combination of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, dust, construction activities, rubbish burning and pollutants from agricultural fires in adjacent states of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, rural residents regularly burn crop residue to clear them quickly, generating hazardous pollution that then gets trapped over the capital as cooler air descends.

Public Health and Financial Impact

Public health and economic consequences on the nearly 33 million residents living in the capital region is substantial, according to various investigations.

This pollution leads to elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing diseases, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is projected to be causing ten thousand untimely fatalities per year in the capital.
