‘Oh How We Will Miss This Man’: The Actress Meg Ryan Publishes Emotional Tribute to Rob Reiner
The actress Meg Ryan has shared a moving homage to the late filmmaker Rob Reiner, who was her director in the hit romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally.
A Heartbreaking Event
Reiner was discovered deceased alongside his spouse, Michele Singer Reiner, at their Los Angeles home at the weekend.
“We will miss this man so deeply…” Ryan shared on Instagram, accompanying a photo of them together. “Our gratitude, Rob and Michele, for your faith in true love, stories, and joy. Thank you for your faith in the best in people, and for your profound love of our country.”
Charges Filed
Reiner’s son Nick, 32, faces two counts of first-degree murder and made a court appearance today. He’s being detained without the option of bail. Reports indicate that Reiner’s daughter Romy discovered her father deceased.
“I must hold onto hope that their tale doesn't conclude here, that awareness can be heightened from this,” Ryan went on to write. “Perhaps they would desire a legacy of hope and humanity, leading us toward empathy and tranquility.”
Family Members Issue a Message
Reiner’s surviving children Jake and Romy shared a statement today. “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” they said. “Losing our parents in such a horrific way is a devastation beyond comprehension. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
Peers Pay Their Respects
Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, joined in remembering Reiner through a message shared yesterday alongside tributes from Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.
“His comedic touch was beyond compare, his love of getting the music of the dialogue just right, and his sharpening of the edge of a drama was simply elegant,” the statement said. “He cherished performers and improved scribes. His greatest gift was freedom. If you had an idea, he listened, he brought you into the process. They always felt they were working as a team. To be in his hands as a film-maker was a privilege but that is only part of his legacy.”
An Enduring Filmography
When Harry Met Sally was a hit with both critics and audiences in 1989, earning over $93 million globally and scoring Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
Rob Reiner first encountered Michele Singer Reiner during the production of When Harry Met Sally. The pair were introduced by Barry Sonnenfeld, a fellow filmmaker and pal.
Reiner’s notable filmography featured classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were together in marriage for 36 years.
