That Gory Animated Film Ending That Haunts Audiences
Out of all the mature cartoon movies I have ever viewed, no other has lingered in my mind as much as the fear-filled conclusion of a explicitly bloody as well as overwhelingly transgressive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, this Spanish filmmaker crafted a grim, melancholy and often savage world with a few small , desolate hints of hope.
While Unicorn Wars feels like it stemmed from a drive to expand animation further, the filmmaker explained that it was more an attempt to communicate a widespread, multicultural message regarding “the mutual source of every conflict.”
That message is conveyed through a squad of colorful pastel bears , obviously inspired by a famous series of lovable characters.
Maturing in a society built around warmongering as well as the defense industry, many of the bears are consumed by slaughtering unicorns, because of a sacred text that tells the bears they previously were masters of the woods, before the unicorns forced them out.
A few have not completely accepted the brainwashing, , prefer to experiment with narcotics and fornicate outdoors.
Unlike their gentle equivalents, these colorful critters have visible sexual organs , obvious urges.
For one notably brutal, pessimistic creature, the bear named Bluey, the conflict with unicorns turns into a road to control — and specifically to supremacy above his gentler, nicer brother the character Tubby.
Bluey is a bully and an obvious psychopath , and as fear takes over his squad and claims his teammates individually, he takes progressively power on his own behalf, via progressively bloody, harmful methods.
Meanwhile, the horned creatures are suffering their own terror, as an expanding, deadly beast in their habitat.
“In the early stages, it feels like a comedy,” the director said. “But then it becomes a more dramatic and sorrowful movie. And in the finale, it becomes a scary feature.”
Unicorn Wars begins feeling a bit like among the whimsical films from an iconic animator, that uncover a mischievous joy in permitting cartoon characters curse, fire weapons, or sex each other up.
Afterward it becomes closer to a darker movie from that creator, including ever more explicit brutality and a tangible connection to the real tragedy of conflict.
In the finale, it becomes a full-on theatrical horror bloodbath.
The terror that turns the film an ideal spooky-season watch starts much sooner than that description suggests.
Unicorn Wars is one for the hardcore gorehounds, for lovers of extreme cinema who wish to see a film they’ve never seen on-screen before, and who can handle a story which delivers unflinching brutality.
View it in a dark room with no disturbances, and that ending will burrow deep within you and take up residence there.
