The esteemed football figure has stated that he is not pursuing a return to football management, noting that it would be difficult to duplicate the special mission he encountered as the national team coach.

The former coach indicated his aim to dedicate his efforts toward engaging the next generation and combating what he described as a dominant downbeat story currently prevalent in the country.

Embracing New Avenues Outside of Football

Speaking on air, Southgate was asked about rumors linking him with vacant management roles in the English football and elsewhere.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he answered. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

Dedication to Role Models

Prior to the launch of his new title, his new work on leadership, Southgate stated that he is highly enthusiastic about setting examples for teenagers, applying insights from his time as England’s men’s football manager from 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.

Southgate feels that his time managing the squad, during which the team shifted from being widely disliked to widely supported, holds wider relevance.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he said. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”

Family Life and Shaping the Next Generation

Reflecting on his role as a parent, he commented: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He went on: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Togetherness Beyond Conflict

Southgate insisted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the societal attention often highlights division.

“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he said. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

His forthcoming book, the book Dear England, is set to present further insights on leadership and country pride drawn from his notable professional journey.
