The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that an element was missing in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition composed by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The series' opening fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
