UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl containing several human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct personas, each with their own fears and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, though additional clips show the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.
A World of Individual Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate something primal within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms where their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
