Why Los Blancos Possess 'Total Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an teenage makes Real Madrid history in a key European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.
In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.
At 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica
This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.
He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.
Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and determination he brought to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and awarded him minutes in the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the clash with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing the game, each day you go to train and each day you have a game," stated the player after his first appearance.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.
The teenager has seized it with performances that have defied his youth and experience.
"He is a very quick player, and you can see his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand fans might be astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to do what he usually does.
"He will keep receiving chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, moving through local academies before joining Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.
He holds both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.
Under international regulations, players may represent multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a official full international.
Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his progress with interest.
Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. My situation is positive with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion soon."
This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Brahim decided to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.
He played 74 minutes in the two-one victory at City, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight tie with the German champions.
His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team pursue future success.
Following his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.
"The manager treats me the same. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he commented following the success at Manchester.
